Professor John Bessler took part in a Brookings Institution podcast that discussed Against the Death Penalty, a new book edited by Bessler that details U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer’s passionate dissent in Glossip v. Gross.

The 2015 decision found death-row prisoners in Oklahoma had failed to prove that the use of a sedative in a three-drug lethal injection cocktail violated the Eighth Amendment prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment. The prisoners’ suit alleged the sedative, midazolam, does not block pain from the two other drugs, which cause paralysis and cardiac arrest.
