Renee Hatcher describes water shutoffs at City Council hearing

Renee Hatcher, clinical teaching fellow in the Community Development Clinic, testified at a Baltimore City Council hearing Wednesday night about water affordability and water shutoffs in the city.

The Baltimore Brew news website reported her comments in “Baltimore’s high water rates violate U.N. standards, advocates say” (Oct. 27, 2016).

“Typically, the city shuts off about 3,000 households a year, but in March 2015 about 8,000 were shut off,” the story said, quoting Hatcher. “Roughly 4,000 of those accounts were not turned back on for a full year.”
