Professor Epps on Threats to the Legitimacy of the Supreme Court

Garrett Epps jpegReminiscing about his childhood view of the Supreme Court on WBUR’s Radio Boston program Oct. 8, Professor Garrett Epps noted, “To me, a federal judge was the next best thing to being God.” In the wake of the heavily partisan Kavanaugh nomination process, however, Epps says, “The Supreme Court today has not got that place. If a crisis like desegregation comes along, I don’t think [the court] will have those reserves of prestige to draw on.”

The conversation, which included Rosanna Cavallaro, professor of law at Suffolk University, explored whether, after the divisiveness of the Kavanaugh confirmation, the court can stand above the political fray and maintain its legitimacy. Listen to the entire 30-minute program.
